1 To the Overseer. 'On the Lilies,' by David.
Save me, O God, for come have waters unto the soul.
2 I have sunk in deep mire, And there is no standing, I have come into the depths of the waters, And a flood hath overflown me.
3 I have been wearied with my calling, Burnt hath been my throat, Consumed have been mine eyes, waiting for my God.
4 Those hating me without cause Have been more than the hairs of my head, Mighty have been my destroyers, My lying enemies, That which I took not away I bring back. Without a cause – Prophetic of Jesus (John 15:25)--who was crucified because his works were good and theirs were evil; because he taught the way of the Lord more perfectly than they. R5215:2

5 O God, Thou Thou hast known Concerning my overturn, And my desolations from Thee have not been hid.
6 Let not those waiting on Thee be ashamed because of me, O Lord, Jehovah of Hosts, Let not those seeking Thee Blush because of me, O God of Israel.
7 For because of Thee I have borne reproach, Shame hath covered my face.
8 A stranger I have been to my brother, And a foreigner to sons of my mother. Unto my brethren – In the case of Jesus and the early Church, the persecution came from their brethren according to the flesh, the Jews. Since then, from their nominal Christian brethren. R5215:5

9 For zeal for Thy house hath consumed me, And the reproaches of Thy reproachers Have fallen upon me. The zeal – That which is warm, aglow, hot. R5250:2

Born of love. R3296:1

That eager, arduous, active interest in the Lord's plans and their development which is begotten of sincerest love for the Lord and those dear to him. R913:2*

The measure of our zeal in the service is the measure of our love for the heavenly Bridegroom. R913:6*

The more love there is connected with our consecration to God, the more quickly will it consume our offering. T46

If we have the spirit of Christ, it will be the spirit of service. R5250:2

Of thine house – David had a zeal for the Tabernacle and the Temple. Jesus had a zeal in cleansing the Temple. But now the Church is the house of God, the Temple. (1 Cor. 6:19) R5250:1

Hath eaten me up – Our Lord's zeal prompted him to lay down his life for us, and he invites the Church to be similarly consumed with him in service to the Church. R5250:2

Consumed all my energies. R913:2*

And the reproaches – "Let us go to him without the camp, bearing the reproach with him." (Heb. 13:13) T62

All associated with the truth will bear some of its reproaches. R1798:5

Are fallen upon me – Christ and all who faithfully teach the truth. E490

10 And I weep in the fasting of my soul, And it is for a reproach to me.
11 And I make my clothing sackcloth, And I am to them for a simile.
12 Those sitting at the gate meditate concerning me, And those drinking strong drink, Play on instruments.
13 And I my prayer [is] to Thee, O Jehovah, A time of good pleasure, O God, In the abundance of Thy kindness, Answer me in the truth of Thy salvation.
14 Deliver me from the mire, and let me not sink, Let me be delivered from those hating me, And from deep places of waters.
15 Let not a flood of waters overflow me, Nor let the deep swallow me up, Nor let the pit shut her mouth upon me.
16 Answer me, O Jehovah, for good [is] Thy kindness, According to the abundance Of Thy mercies turn Thou unto me,
17 And hide not Thy face from Thy servant, For I am in distress haste, answer me.
18 Be near unto my soul redeem it, Because of mine enemies ransom me.
19 Thou Thou hast known my reproach, And my shame, and my blushing, Before Thee [are] all mine adversaries.
20 Reproach hath broken my heart, and I am sick, And I look for a bemoaner, and there is none, And for comforters, and I have found none.
21 And they give for my food gall, And for my thirst cause me to drink vinegar. Vinegar to drink – Prophetic of the circumstances of Jesus' sacrificial death. R1205:2, R1394:5

Not ordinary vinegar, but more properly sour wine, the common, cheap drink of soldiers. R2474:3

Jesus hungered and thirsted that we might have the water and bread of life. R4173:3

They gave me vinegar to drink – Fulfilled when our Lord was on the cross. John 19:28-29
22 Their table before them is for a snare, And for a recompence for a trap. Let their table – The table of fleshly Israel, so bountifully spread with the rich promises and blessings offered them through Christ. B215; R4287:6

Become a snare - Because of their hardness of heart. B215

23 Darkened are their eyes from seeing, And their loins continually shake Thou. Eyes be darkened – They have stumbled, they are blinded; but their blindness is not to be perpetual. CR104:3; SM398:T

The period of their blindness is the second part of the "double"; with its fulfilment, their blindness will begin to vanish, and "all the blind eyes shall be opened." (Isa 35:5) CR104:3

24 Pour upon them Thine indignation, And the fierceness of Thine anger doth seize them. Pour out thine indignation – The wrath of God.

Upon them – The Jews (especially the Jewish church-nation). This fits with him casting them off in 33 A.D. This Psalm indicates the thoughts of Jesus. (Note vs 21)

This was answered in the terrible slaughter that took place in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. and finds its parallel in 'The Great War' of 1914.
25 Their tower is desolated, In their tents there is no dweller. Some feel this has reference to Judas. The verses in this context all refer to the treatment of Jesus.

Note the following two Hebrew words and their usage.
H5221
נכה
nâkâh
naw-kaw'
A primitive root; to strike (lightly or severely, literally or figuratively): - beat, cast forth, clap, give [wounds], X go forward, X indeed, kill, make [slaughter], murderer, punish, slaughter, slay (-er, -ing), smite (-r, -ing), strike, be stricken, (give) stripes, X surely, wound.

H2491
חלל
châlâl
khaw-lawl'
From H2490; pierced (especially to death); figuratively polluted: - kill, profane, slain (man), X slew, (deadly) wounded.

Him whom thou has smitten – Strong's H5221 "to strike."

Wounded – Strong's H2491 "pierced."

Compare with Isa. 53:4,5 ".. we did esteem him [Jesus] stricken, smitten [H5221] of God.. He was wounded [H2490] for our transgressions."
26 For they have pursued him Thou hast smitten, And recount of the pain of Thy pierced ones.
27 Give punishment for their iniquity, And they enter not into Thy righteousness.
28 They are blotted out of the book of life, And with the righteous are not written. Let them be blotted out of the book of the living – If this is indeed a reference to Judas it would certainly fit. "Good were it for that man if he had never been born." Mark 14:21; Matt. 26:24
29 And I [am] afflicted and pained, Thy salvation, O God, doth set me on high.
30 I praise the name of God with a song, And I magnify Him with thanksgiving,
31 And it is better to Jehovah than an ox, A bullock horned hoofed.
32 The humble have seen they rejoice, Ye who seek God and your heart liveth.
33 For Jehovah hearkeneth unto the needy, And His bound ones He hath not despised. Not his prisoners – Death's captives. A112

34 The heavens and earth do praise Him, Seas, and every moving thing in them.
35 For God doth save Zion, And doth build the cities of Judah, And they have dwelt there, and possess it.
36 And the seed of His servants inherit it, And those loving His name dwell in it!
