Chapter 2

Chapter 2 References

Verse 1

Read vs. 1-4

"Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip."
QuestionAnswer
To what should we give special heed? 'These things.'
What are 'these things?' The things mentioned in chapter 1, i.e., that God has given to His Son a special place and that the angels are sent to minister to the heirs of salvation, i.e., the church. - R5114
Why should we give them 'the more earnest heed?' E204:3
Read verses 2 and 3 for the answer.

Verse 2

"For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;"
QuestionAnswer
When was the word spoken by angels? R3764
When did every transgression receive a reward? Heb. 12:18-20, 25
What principle is here being described? Justice. Psa. 89:14

Verse 3

"How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;"
QuestionAnswer
Who is "we?" The church.
What is it that "we escape?" The judgement of God.
What is the "great salvation?" The High Calling - "The kingdom of heaven is at hand." Matt. 4:17
When was this "great salvation" first spoken of and by whom? By Jesus during the 3½ years of his ministry.
To whom is Paul referring to when he says it "was confirmed unto us?" - Be very specific. The church at the time he wrote this epistle.
How do we know to whom Paul was referring and why is this important to us? We know because Paul tells us that it "was confirmed unto us by them that heard him."
This is important to us because it confirms that this is not simply the word of one, but of many witnesses.

Verse 4

"God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to his own will?"
QuestionAnswer
Besides the witnesses mentioned in vs. 3, were there any other witnesses? Is God a strong enough witness?
How did God witness? By the exercise of various supernatural powers. See Acts 2:1-4; Acts 2:43; Acts 3
Why did God add these witnesses? To validate the Apostles before men. R1695

Verse 5

"For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak."
QuestionAnswer
What is implied by this verse?
  1. That Angels will not be the rulers during the Kingdom.
  2. That Angels were the rulers of earth at some time. Since Satan is the ruler (by usurpation) of the "present evil world" that would leave only "the world that was" - the period prior to the flood, as the time when angels ruled.

Verse 6

"But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him?"
QuestionAnswer
Who is the "one" that testified? David (and Job) - Psa. 8:4; Job 7:17-18; Psa. 144:3
What is man? Psa. 8:4
Man is a combination of the elements of the earth ("dust of the ground") and the breath of life. This combination equals "a living soul." - See Gen. 1:27; 2:7
Why is God mindful of man. In God's plan, man is the lowest of His reasoning creatures. It is the "lowness" of mankind that made them such an ideal proving ground. We know of at least two who were tested by being involved with man. The first was Lucifer, "Son of the Morning." He was the covering cherub in the garden of Eden. He clearly failed his test.

The other is our Lord. He accepted humiliation to be made human. He then accepted further humiliation and accepted a sinners death (though He himself was without sin).

It is from mankind that God has chosen to develop the 144,000 who will receive the divine nature - to be of the same nature as God!

Who is "the son of man?" Jesus. Matt. 8:20; 9:6; 11:19; 13:41; 16:13; 17:9; 18:11; 20:28; 25:31; 26:64; John 6:53; Rev. 1:13; 14:14

Verse 7

"Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:"
QuestionAnswer
Is this "a little lower" or "a little while lower" than the angels? A little lower. There is nothing to do with time in this statement. It is a little less in degree.  RVIC
THOU HAST MADE HIM ONLY A LITTLE INFERIOR TO THE ANGELS - Weymouth
Who was "made a little lower than the angels?" Adam.
How can it be said that he was "crowned with glory and honour?" This has reference to the glory and honor of the perfect human nature.
Over what was he given the rule? Over "the works of thy hands." - Over the earth.
Gen. 1:26-28

Verse 8

"Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him."
QuestionAnswer
Who is "him?" Man. More specifically, Adam - before he sinned.
What was put under his subjection? "All things."
What does it mean - "all things?" All of God's earthly creation. - The animals, the environment, etc. Gen. 1:28
Is there any signifigance to things being put "under his feet?" It is another way of saying that he has dominion over all things.
Have all things indeed been put under man's dominion? All things are not yet put under man's dominion.

Verse 9

"But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man."
QuestionAnswer
What do we see? Jesus.
Why was Jesus made "a little lower than the angels?" "For the suffering of death."
When and how was Jesus "crowned with glory and honour?" When he became a man. He was crowned with the glory and honor of the perfect human nature. He had the dominion that goes with it. - See Luke 19:30 as an example of his dominion over the animals.
Why was he made thus? In order to be man's redeemer.

Verse 10

"For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings."
QuestionAnswer
"For it became him, ..." Who is "him?" The Father.
Who are the "many sons?" Rom. 8:29 -- Primarily, the church.
What is the glory that these sons are brought to? For the saints it is glory, honor and immortality. For the world of mankind it is the glory and honor of the perfect human nature with dominion over the earth.
Who is "the captain of their salvation?" Jesus.
If it is Jesus, how then could Paul say that he (Jesus) was "made perfect through sufferings?" - Wasn't Jesus already perfect? While Jesus was indeed a perfect human being, this is not how he was "made perfect." Heb. 5:7-9. It was as a new creature that he needed to be made perfect (or complete). [Strong's 5048 - to complete or accomplish.] In other words, He needed to be completely developed and tested before he could be given the Divine Nature.

Verse 11

"For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,"
QuestionAnswer
Who is "he that sanctifieth?" Jesus.
What does it mean to be sanctified? To be set apart or made holy.
Who are they who are sanctified? The saints.
What does Jesus then call them? Brethren. - See Matt. 12:48-50

Verse 12

Saying, "I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee."
QuestionAnswer
Where does this quote come from? Psa. 22:22. - This Psalm describes our Lord on the cross. In this passage he makes reference to his brethren. It can only refer to the saints.
What is Paul's point in quoting this text? He is strengthening his argument that Jesus was not to be alone, but that he was to have many brethren.

Verse 13

And again, "I will put my trust in him." And again, "Behold I and the children which God hath given me."
QuestionAnswer
From where are these quotes? 2 Sam. 22:3; Isa. 8:17-18
What point is Paul establishing here? That our Lord is not alone in sacrifice. Though He was first, He has others (the saints) who follow in His footsteps and thus become His "brethren."

Verse 14

"Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;"
QuestionAnswer
Who are "the children" who are made partakers of flesh and blood? The church.
Why did Jesus also become flesh and blood? To destroy the devil.
This verse claims that Satan has "the power of death." How then do we explain Rev. 1:18? - "I am he that .. have the keys of hades and of death." If Jesus has the keys of death, how is it that Satan has the power of death? Satan can influence to sin, the penalty for which is death. Jesus, on the other hand, has the authority (keys) to open the prison-house of death. 2 Tim. 1:10 - Christ abolished death.

We should also remember that Paul is describing the reason Jesus left the glory of heaven to become a man. It is AFTER he completed the task of overcoming the world that he was given "the keys of hades and of death."

Verse 15

"And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage."
QuestionAnswer
Who are those described here? The Great Company.
Of what are they afraid? Death. We think this is more specific than simply the death that comes to all through the fall. Rather it is the sacrifical death they fear. These are desireous of walking on two paths at once. They want to please both God and mammon. Luke 16:13

Mammon: Strong's G3126
μαμμωνάς
mammonas
mam-mo-nas'
Of Chaldee origin (confidence, that is, figuratively wealth, personified); mammonas, that is, avarice (deified): - mammon.

What is the effect of their fear? It makes them subject to bondage -- all their lifetimes.
How are these delivered? By the destruction of Satan, the one who has the power of death. See vs. 14.
1Co 5:5
What is meant by "all their lifetime?" 1) This cannot mean from the moment of birth for surely they were not fearful of any kind of death then.
2) It seems to indicate all their spirit-begotten lifetime.

Verse 16

"For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham."
QuestionAnswer
Why did Jesus not take the nature of angels? Because an angel would not be an equal or corresponding price for a man.
Why did he take on him "the seed of Abraham." Is this important? "In thee and thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed." Gen. 12:3. He had to become the seed of Abraham in order to fulfill the promise made to Abraham.

Verse 17

"Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people."
QuestionAnswer
In how many things was Jesus made like the church? All things.
Why? In order to be a merciful as well as a faithful high priest.
What is meant by: "to make reconciliation for the sins of the people." In today's world it is politically incorrect to point even acknowledge sin. There are laws of men that must be obeyed, but the breaking of these laws is not called sin. To have sin implies a standard of righteousness.
Jesus took Adam's place in death and in so doing He bought the human race. He thus bought for Adam's race the same thing that Adam had, i.e., the opportunity for everlasting life based on obedience to the divine will.
Jesus became the world's mediator, to give them a standing of justification (during the Millennium) before the Father.

Verse 18

"For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted."
QuestionAnswer
How did Jesus suffer? By "being tempted," among other things.
Of what value were the sufferings of Jesus? By having to go through much of what our fallen race has had to endure it developed in him a great sympathy for our fallen condition.
